For ‘Part 2’ of ‘My Yoga Journey’ I had originally planned to do a post explaining all the benefits of yoga. For example: more energy, less stressed, happier, calmer, better life in general etc. However, this afternoon when I was doing my yoga I had a sort of brainwave and have decided to change the theme of today’s post. (If you would like to know the BENEFITS of yoga please let me know and I will do a post about it!)
So today I want to talk about something more personal: HOW YOGA HAS CHANGED MY LIFE.
- Firstly yoga has made me believe in myself. Every time I step on my mat I always encounter ‘resistance’. Whether it is in a particular pose that I am finding difficult or in general. Resistance is usually there. It is in that moment of ‘resistance’ that you have two choices. Either back down or step up and overcome it! When resistance occurs I ask myself which I choose. Now I am going to be honest with you. Sometimes I do back down from resistance. I think that is ok. You don’t always have to push yourself completely. Life is about balance. But on the days when I encounter resistance and decide to overcome it, that empowers me so much! After overcoming a hurdle you have confidence in yourself and know that the ‘limits’ you believe in are not actually real. Every single time I overcome resistance in yoga it makes me believe that actually I can do more than I think. I begin to push the boundaries around me more and more. This might just be in a pose in yoga, for example how long you can stay in Warrior II. But then when you take that mindset into your life it is really exciting. Pushing the boundaries of life and seeing where you can go. The possibilities are endless and please don’t forget it!
2. Yoga inspires me! This is sort of leading on from the last point, but when I step on my mat I feel inspired. When I step off my mat I feel inspired. When I am on my mat I am inspired. Again I bring that inspiration into my daily life and it motivates me to be the best version of myself and to help others do so as well. Inspiration is SO important in life. Think how much better life is when you are INSPIRED to jump out of bed at 6 in the morning and make the day great! Yoga has this effect on me and it has changed my life. I no longer complain about being tired or focus on the negative aspects of my life. Yoga inspires me to be a positive person and it is awesome.
3. Yoga has helped me reconnect with my inner child. On the mat I am playful just like a child is and forget about people’s perceptions of me. I just ‘go with the flow’ and do whatever I feel like. This is a really liberating feeling. I try and bring this into everyday life by not being so serious and uptight and just laughing a bit more. It’s fun. You should try it.
4. Finally I think yoga puts you in touch with something ‘bigger than yourself’. By this I mean something divine. Call it God or just the universe. Practicing yoga makes you aware of that. Before I practiced yoga I refused to believe in God. I was very proud of the fact that I didn’t. But now I am completely open minded to the possibility. I find it hard to explain the effect this has had on my life. But believing in a divine power really is life changing. Suddenly life has a lot more meaning and you don’t need all the answers anymore. You just cultivate this trust. And with that trust you then have acceptance and finally gratitude. You can accept and be grateful for everything in your life. Whether it is good or bad, you are thankful for it all. So ‘negative’ actions/events/things no longer impact you in the way they once did. And this makes you a lot happier, trust me.
