I have always struggled with what I should eat before yoga. I have had a few times where I have eaten too soon or too much and felt very sick whilst doing yoga. Iyengar recommends not eating 4 hours before you practice yoga, but sometimes this can be difficult. If I am practicing yoga at 10 in the morning say, I like to have a good breakfast before hand so I am ready and fuelled for the class.
I always eat lots of fruits in the morning, whatever I am doing during the day. They make me feel so good and energised and I just love them.
Recently I have been having a big smoothie bowl with spirulina which is a great iron source for vegans. Here is the recipe for the current smoothie bowl I have been having, it is the perfect bowl for a pre – yoga class meal!
- 2 frozen bananas
- 5 strawberries
- Handful of blueberries
- 1/2 tsp spirulina
- 3 medjool dates
- Desiccated coconut
- Blend the banana, strawberries, spirulina and blueberries with water or nut milk of your choice. Top with dates, kiwi, coconut, granola and anything you want. Enjoy!
It is essential to eat easily digestible foods before you practice yoga, otherwise you will not feel your best on your mat. After eating this I would wait about an hour and a half before I do my practice.
Remember food is fuel! So be conscious of what you and putting in your body and how it is going to fuel you. This way you will always feel your best.
