Finding Balance On Social Media

Social media.. it has become such a big part of our lives that I don’t think many of us could imagine a world without it. How did we all cope before the internet? What did we do?

I often romanticise about a life without the internet and technology. I would love to go back to the days when we gathered our own food and lived in closely knit social groups wandering around our unspoilt planet earth.

This is obviously a very unrealistic fantasy in this day and age, we have become too far detached from those hunter gathers we once were. Our society will (probably) never de-evolve back to what it was before the agricultural revolution. There have been too many steps that we can’t undo. However we can hope to continue to evolve our society into a more conscious one, maybe completing the circle and becoming closer to what it once was like 5000 years ago.

I think we can all do our bit to grow the level of consciousness of our society. One way to do this is to be mindful about our use of social media.

Spending all your time on social media is not healthy. When we are looking at the world through a screen we get a distorted view and are not living in the present. We are stuck looking constantly in the past. A little like when you look up at the sky at night. You see the stars but because the light takes years to travel to earth, we are really looking back in time. That is what looking at social media is like.

Social media can lead to much unhappiness. I talked a little about this in my blog post on Instagram. Comparing our lives to others and FOMO (apparently a real thing now) can make people miserable. And they are bringing it all upon themselves.

However social media isn’t all bad. It connects us. Before the internet we couldn’t connect to people all over the globe at the click of a button, but now we can.

We can inspire others and use social media as a tool to do good in the world and change it for the better. There are countless examples of how powerful social media can be and what can happen when we all join together to make a difference.

With social media we can change lives! Even reaching one person out there with your message can make a difference in the world. Social media has changed my life: It opened my eyes to veganism and travelling, and I have it to thank for so many amazing experiences I have had.

I do find it to be very passive though. What I mean by this is that instead of being out there experiencing the world, we are sat on our bums looking at it. Looking or watching it is not the same as experiencing it for yourself.

So what is the solution? Like so many other things the only answer I can give is balance. Use social media for good causes but don’t use it all the time. Use it in moderation in a positive way and it will lead to happiness in your life.

The best thing to do is just observe yourself when and how you are using it. Do you feel as though you have wasted your time after you have gone on it or do you feel inspired? Does it make you feel good or bad? Does it add to your life or take over it?

These are all good questions that I will be asking myself over the next couple of days. However much I dream about getting rid of my phone, it does add something to my life in a very positive way.

I love feeling connected and inspired everyday by social media. It has opened my eyes more than I ever could have imagined and I am grateful for that.

Namaste
