This week I have started a happiness project..

I was listening to Oprah’s SuperSoul Podcast the other day (something I have been COMPLETELY obsessed with recently) and one of the episodes that came up was a conversation with Gretchen Rubin, the author of The Happiness Project.

I was so inspired by this conversation. How Gretchen took her own happiness into her own hands and decided things she could physically do everyday to increase her happiness. Instead of waiting for it to come to her in the future, she took responsibility and used the present moment to manifest her happiness.

This is something that resonates with me and I have been doing this for a while now. But Gretchen took it one step further.. She gave herself a focus for each month to increase her happiness with the idea that by the end of the year she would be able to put it all together and be completely happy.

I have decided to do my own happiness project because I have realised that there is always room for more happiness. Also I am not very good at focusing on one thing at a time. For my New Year’s intentions I had five which were divided up into more.. This gives me too much to do at once and sometimes I don’t know where to start.. I like the idea of having a clear focus for each month of the year and then putting it all together at the end of the year. It sounds so much more manageable to what I usually do. So I am following Gretchen and turning 2018 into a happiness project of my very own…

Before I even started anything I had a big clean of my apartment. I believe that a clean space equals a clean mind.. I had a spring clean (in January) so I could have this fresh start and be in a good space when I started my project.. Already I felt happier. Having a tidy room made SUCH a difference and I could feel my mind settling down as well..

I started off the project by journalling. Firstly I listed all my good habits, the things that are automatic for me now and I want to keep in my life. These were things such as practicing yoga everyday, meditating every morning, eating fairly healthily and getting lots of sleep.

I then decided to write down all the good habits that I wanted to incorporate into my life, physical things that I could do everyday which would make me happier. These included: eating mindfully, eating 10 fruits and vegetables a day, reading for an hour a day and getting outside into nature.

I only focused on positive habits that I wanted to add to my life, rather than negative things I wanted to stop. I think it is important to focus on the positives because this rewires our brain and is where our attention and energy goes. Have you heard the saying where attention goes energy flows.. ? Well when we focus our mind on negative aspects of our life that we want to remove, for example saying I want to stop watching TV, then our mind doesn’t know that it is a negative, it only focuses on watching TV, so a lot of the time you will end up watching even more TV because you are thinking about it more.. However when you set a positive intention such as I want to read more then you are more likely to keep to it and having that positive energy behind it makes it even more powerful.

Once I had decided on all the positive things I wanted to add into my life, I divided them into three categories: Physical, Mental and Spiritual. I did this because each month I am going to add something from each category into my life. I thought that adding three things into my life each month is a lot more manageable than trying to add everything at once. Each month I am going to build on the month before, thus using 2018 to evolve my life into the best it can be.

I gave each month a focus from each category. Something I can put all my attention on during the month to change my habits and manifest more happiness into my life:

For January I have chosen my physical focus is going to be EAT MINDFULLY. This is because so often I am rushing when I am eating or eating whilst I do something else, I have noticed that I rarely taste the food and I often over eat because I am not completely present for my meals. This has been an issue for me for a while now and I have decided to change it once and for all. Every meal I am going to turn into a spiritual practice, I am being completely present when I eat and I am tasting each mouthful. It has already had an impact on my life, I feel happier because I am enjoying my food more!

My spiritual practice for this month is to MEDITATE FOR 30 MINS EVERY MORNING. I already meditate every morning but I really want to build up my practice, so I am using the rest of January to have a really consistent meditation practice and push myself a little bit. I always feel so much better when I meditate for half an hour: I feel calmer and more present, however sometimes I chose sleep over a full 30 minutes of meditation.. So my intention for this month is to stay completely committed to my meditation and create time for it.

Finally, my mental intention for this month is GRATITUDE. Every morning I am choosing to be gratitude. Every moment of the day I am putting my focus onto gratitude: what am I grateful for right now? and where can I bring more gratitude into this moment? I am also journaling every night what I am grateful about. This is to completely rewire my brain. It is to focus my brain on everything in my life which is good and works. When we are looking at what we are grateful for, not only are we happier but we manifest more of that into our lives. So I choose to be grateful everyday.

So maybe you feel inspired to start your own happiness project.. I hope you do. It is something we can all work on, there will always be room for more happiness in your life, never limit yourself.
