Women Food and God

I have just finished reading this amazing book called Women, Food and God. I have to share it with you all because it has been truly revolutionary for me. Geneen Roth, the author, just makes total sense; everything she says I can relate with. How food is never the problem; how we are just walking around using food to mask our problems yet this creates so many more in our life; how if we could just be ok with sitting with what we feel then we wouldn’t have to use food and then we could feel so much better in our bodies and in our life.

I am recommending this book to everyone I know. I just LOVED it. I already feel like a different person after reading it; I am already starting to see changes in my life. The biggest change being that I am not overeating – I am finally eating what my body wants and how much my body wants – this is kind of a big deal! I have spent my life not listing to my body and so I have lost out on taking joy in food, and life. I have blocked out my body’s signals because I did not trust in it, but doing this meant that I did not trust myself. Now I am on the path to learning how to trust myself again and take pleasure and delight in food, rather than seeing it as a struggle.

For anyone out there who struggles with food, or body image, or dieting, I want to share the secret with you. That secret is SELF LOVE. When you love your body and yourself you are going to eat with love, this will mean that you eat all the right foods and the right amount.

Eat to empower because you love yourself enough to stop hurting yourself.

because … who doesn’t want to take care of what they love?

But I know, this can be so much easier said than done. If you don’t love yourself then where do you start?

Geneen shares some Eating Guidelines at the back of the book, which she says are the path and yet also the destination. They are the way towards eating with love, and yet they are also what eating with love looks like.

So if you have no idea where to start, then I say start with these (and also read her book). These are not a set of rules. They are not another diet to follow. They are merely the advice of someone who has been down this path and is now speaking back out of pure love to show us all the way.

Eating Guidelines

  1. Eat when you are hungry
  2. Eat sitting down in a calm environment
  3. Eat without distractions
  4. Eat what your body wants
  5. Eat until you are satisfied
  6. Eat (with the intention of being) in full view of others
  7. Eat with enjoyment, gusto and pleasure.

These make total sense right? We all know this already, and yet sometimes we don’t listen to these guidelines like we know we should. Geneen suggests starting off with just one and focusing your attention on that until it becomes easy, and then you can pick another to work on.

So I hope this has been helpful to you guys, I wanted to share it with you all because it has had such a big impact on me and I know that it has the potential to help so many more people who are struggling out there. Know that you don’t have to struggle. Know that food can and should bring you joy. Know that you can easily live at your natural weight without restricting yourself.

I think the moral of this post is that it is possible to have your cake and eat it!
