I think the first ‘spiritual’ book I ever read was Deepak Chopra, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. I can trace my transformation all the way back to reading this book… It was recommended on my reading list for the yoga teacher training I had just embarked on. Although it was at the very bottom of the list, it was the cheapest book, so I ended up reading it first.
I picked up a second hand copy. It was hardback and I remember it having a nice smell. I finished the book within a couple of days and I felt as though my mind had been opened to something much deeper, something I had spent my whole life searching for but had never found..
I passed the book on to my boyfriend, telling him that it was the BEST book EVER and he MUST MUST read it. He kindly obliged, and loved it as well. From then on I have been telling anyone who will listen how great this book is.
Only reading one book didn’t really do it for me though, I wanted more and more of this wisdom that I had discovered.. I went on to read Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now, I found him slightly blunt, but after reading the book for a second time the message got across to me and I realised the truth in what he was saying.
Over Christmas last year I picked up A New Earth, also by Eckhart Tolle which I enjoyed much more than The Power of Now. I found stillness whilst reading that book and experienced more and more moments of utter bliss during the day. I felt completely in the present moment and I understood myself so much more after learning about the ego from Eckhart’s teachings.
Another book I happened to read the Christmas before (back in 2016) was The Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman. I was absorbed in this story and really couldn’t believe it was all true! I found a lot that I could relate too in this book and it helped me to see that this path is really a practice and it can take years, but there is always hope and light at the end.
I don’t know how many books I have read since I started this journey, probably too many to count, but I wanted to share with you my top favourites today…
THE ALCHEMIST by Paulo Coelho
SIDDHARTHA by Hermann Hesse
YOU ARE A BADASS by Jen Sincero
EAT PRAY LOVE by Elizabeth Gilbert
WOMEN FOOD AND GOD by Geneen Roth
Each of these books has impacted my life in a profound way. I believe that when I read each book, I read it at the exact time that I needed it in my life, and it altered my path for the better.
I feel inspired when read; inspired to be a better person and do something good with my life. I am grateful to feel that way, so often we long to feel like this and sometimes it is simply reading the words of someone else who can evoke that within us.
I recommend all of these books. They are truly amazing. They have the power to change your life.
