DID YOU KNOW…
Every single piece of plastic ever made, still exists on the earth today.
When I heard that fact it blew my mind. That is why, this week on The In Alignment Podcast I am speaking all about zero waste, specifically plastic and what we can do to help!
HERE ARE THE FACTS:
Next year we will produce more than 300 million tonnes of plastic.
There is a 9% increase in plastic each year.
Each year enough plastic is thrown away to circle the earth 4 times.
Plastic is about 10% of general waste.
The main use of plastic is single use items and most of these go straight into landfill.
Americans use 2,500,000 plastic bottles every hour.
We go through 10 billion plastic bags worldwide in 1 week.
Only 1% of plastic bags worldwide are recycled.
Plastic is the largest source of ocean litter.
6 billion kg of trash are added to the ocean.
This kills 100,000 mammals and 1 million seabirds every year.
These facts are pretty shocking. I know we might not witness the severe impact that plastic is having on our planet everyday, but it is still happening even if we cannot see it. In the oceans especially it is such a terrible problem, yet it can be easy to turn a blind eye to all of that because it is not happening directly in front of us.
However dreadful the plastic problem is, there is still hope. If we each reduce our plastic usage and do our bit then it is going to have such a big impact on the planet. For example, if you stopped buying bottled water then you will be saving 100 disposable bottles each year- that is a lot for one person! and all of that is going to add up.
So don’t underestimate what a massive difference you can make to this planet.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP:
1. SAY NO TO SINGLE USE ITEMS
e.g. plastic cutlery, straws, take away cups and containers, plastic bags…
be prepared and bring your own
especially make sure to bring your own reusable bag EVERYWHERE as this saves A LOT of unnecessary plastic.
buy loose items when food shopping, and go for items that have less/zero packaging.
2. STOP BUYING BOTTLED WATER
This will save 100 plastic disposable bottles every year!
Bring your own water bottle everywhere and refill it as you go.
I recommend Hydro Flask which are super awesome
Also, this saves MONEY! Bottled water only contains about 3p of water, but on average we pay over £1 per bottle. That is wasting a lot of money as well as plastic.
3. REFILL WHAT YOU CAN
Buy in bulk and try to refill items such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, dishwashing liquid etc. All these products are packaged in plastic, so if we can buy a 5L container rather than 500ml and then refill the smaller container then we are saving plastic.
You can also shop at stores where they have bulk foods such as oats, nuts and seeds, and bring your own jars to refill.
4. REMEMBER THE 5 Rs:
REUSE (AND REPAIR)
Finally, just remember to do your best and what you can. Maybe going 100% zero waste is unsustainable for you (I have to admit I am definitely not there yet) but just making an effort to minimise your waste and especially plastic usage will have a big impact!
